Literature and Identity: Argentinian Literature as a Reflection of National Identity and Social Realities
International Conference
20-21 July 2024
(Zoom sessions: 2 days/Virtual platform: 5 days)
Thematic Approach
GIRES, the Global Institute for Research Education & Scholarship and the Center for Latin American Political Studies (CLAPS) dedicated to interdisciplinarity aims to delve into the profound relationship between Argentine literature and the construction of national identity, as well as to the portrayal of the country’s social, cultural, and historical realities.
The conference wishes to explore the works of prominent Argentine authors and examining the themes and motifs prevalent in their writing, we seek to shed light on the role of literature in shaping a collective sense of identity and providing insights into Argentina’s multifaceted society.
We propose some areas of interest in an effort to facilitate as many angles as possible. We wish to explore the Role of Literature in Constructing Argentine National Identity and the ways it contributed to the construction and representation of national identity, including discussions on literary symbols, themes, and narratives that are emblematic of Argentina. Furthermore, we wish to offer a Portrayal of Cultural Diversity in Argentine Literature namely how it reflects the country’s cultural diversity, including indigenous cultures, immigrant communities, and regional identities focusing on cultural heritage, intercultural encounters, and the negotiation of multiple identities. Also, through the examination of the Historical Fiction and Identity we hope to delve into the analysis of the historical Argentine fiction literature and its role in reconstructing historical events, shaping collective memory, and exploring the complexities of Argentine identity. Topics may address the blending of fact and fiction, the rewriting of history, and the portrayal of marginalized perspectives.
The wealth of Argentine literature offers also the possibility to explore the Gender Identity and Feminism through the analysis of how Argentine literature addresses gender identity, women’s experiences, and feminist perspectives including the representation of gender roles, the exploration of women’s voices and agency, and the intersectionality of gender with other social categories. Similarly, we hope to offer perspectives on the Indigenous Literature and its contribution to the affirmation of Indigenous Identity, cultural preservation, and the decolonization of literary narratives through the presentation of indigenous storytelling traditions, oral literature, and contemporary indigenous authors. Other thematics of interests vary from the Literary Representations of Social Inequality and explanations of how Argentine literature portrays social inequality, class divisions, and power dynamics within Argentine society as well as the Literary Responses to Political Repression focusing on the literary reactions to periods of political repression and authoritarian regimes, such as the military dictatorship of the 1970s and 1980s. Topics may discuss the representation of censorship, human rights violations, and the quest for justice and memory.
In addition we propose the examination of the Literary Landscapes -literature portrays the natural environment, landscapes, and their significance in shaping Argentine identity-, the Literary Imagery and Cultural Icons – literary imagery and cultural icons that have become emblematic of Argentine identity, such as the tango, gauchos, and Buenos Aires- and the Literary Interactions with Other Art Forms such as visual arts, music, cinema and other forms of cultural and artistic expression.
We envision an inclusive and interactive event that fosters dialogue, knowledge exchange, and networking opportunities among participants. We encourage contributions from scholars, researchers, practitioners, artists, and activists working in the fields of the related to the conference disciplines.
