Sümeyra Buran, PhD
Sümeyra Buran is a visiting professor in the Department of English and later Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of California Riverside since she was awarded a research grant by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). Sümeyra Buran is an associate professor of English at Istanbul Medeniyet University (IMU). Her teaching and research areas are English literature, women writers, science fiction, speculative fiction, medical (pos)humanities, posthumanism, ecocriticism, technofeminism, digital-culture, cyber and cyborg studies, human-animal studies, women and gender studies, femicide, violence against women, women in science, race and ethnic studies, historiography, religious futurism, spiritual sf, Sufism, EurAsian and Global literature.
She is a founding and coordinating editor of the Journal of Posthumanism and an editor of a collection series on Posthumanism Studies by Transnational Press London. She is the editor of a collection, Posthumanism in Literaturepublished by TpLondon (2020) and co-editor with Sherryl Vint of Technologies of Feminist Speculative Fiction: Gender, Artificial Life, Reproduction to be published by Palgrave soon, co-editor of Posthumanism in Multudisciplinary Fields (TpLondon 2021), co-editor of the first Anthology of Turkish Science Fiction(TpLondon), co-editor of Religious Futurisms(Manchester University Press, 2022), and co-editor of Beyond the Occident: Perspectives on Past, Present and Speculative Future in Fiction, Art, Media and Film (Routledge, 2022). She is currently writing her monograph, Su-fi: Spiritual Science Fiction.
She is a Focal Point of EOF’s Country Member (European Observatory on Femicide), and the founder of the Center for Human Rights at Istanbul Medeniyet University and the Turkish Observatory on Femicide, co-founder of Posthuman Research Center Turkish and Turkey Science Fiction Research Center, a committee member of BIPOC at the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts (IAFA) and a country representative (Turkey) at the Science Fiction Research Association (SFRA).
